Vincentia Sailing Club’s JB Classic Championship Regatta

Day One

It was a late start to the morning for the first day of the VSC’s end of season Championships Regatta. With the Moona Moona a glass off for the best part of the day, John, Kerry & Watty on Poly, along with Matthew, Scotty & Crackers on a-mark, were relentless in their pursuit of getting some quality races in.

A grand total of 35 x boats hit the start line over the duration of the day. A big welcome to the NSW OK Dinghy fleet who are racing at the VSC for the very first time. We are super stoked to see such an awesome fleet of sailors (both on and off the water) hit the shores of Jervis Bay and race at the VSC.

A solid fleet of 14s were once again on the race track, with a number of locals and many first time sailors hitting the waters of Jervis Bay. The final division, consisting of Nacra 5.8s, Hobie 18s and Hobie 16s were racing competitively on yardstick, with final results concluding the exceptional efforts of the day.

Thanks to Marc Hooper for taking some awesome shots from the shore.

Day Two

It was another sensational day of sailing on Jervis Bay for the second day of the end-of-season Championship event. With another slow start to the morning in regard to the breeze, the bustling activity of sailors on location was evident from a mile away. The intrepid team at the VSC were marking the special weekend with B&E Rolls for breakfast, along with a brand new coffee machine thanks to Jocelyn & Dobbo.

With the breeze not filling in till midday, the decision for an early lunch was called by the race committee. As the breeze began to build slowly across the moona moona, sailors and families enjoyed the array of salads to choose from, along with an expertly cooked BBQ by Joss, Marc, Rebecca, Michelle, Angela, and more.

The steady breeze on the bay resulted in four, high-quality races for the three fleets. The OK Dinghy raced exceptionally on the trapezoidal course, with Mark Rutherford winning cleanly, whilst Dave Haseldine and Pam Johnston fought it out till the very end finishing second and third respectively.

The 18 boat strong Hobie 14 fleet was down to the wire, with local master himself, Andrew McKenzie defending the title honourably against current NSW State Champion Rod Waterhouse. NSW & Victorian Women’s Hobie 14 champion, Carmen Andrews raced admirably, finishing in third place only seven points behind Hot Rod, whilst Andrew Spinelli came home with his greatest performance in fourth place ahead of newbie to the club Brian Bates.

In the big boat fleet, Egbert & Helen were triumphant, winning on yardstick cleanly after a very well sailed regatta. With Eddie & Lottie on the front of the boat on Saturday, Paddy & Zoe cleaned up on Sunday claiming second place overall and first placed Hobie 16, whilst MB & Finbar raced valiantly to finish in third overall.

Huge thanks goes out to all the members of the VSC who chipped in and assisted in the running of an exceptional weekend, especially to our irregulars, Matthew on the secondary rescue boat, and Michelle & Watty from coming all the way down from Wangi Wangi.
