Friday
Friday 8th November marked Round 1 of the VSC’s WaveGP Twilight Series, the first time ever that the VSC has hosted a Friday twilight series.
A total of nine athletes hit the water for the first round of racing, with each sailor bagging four races apiece. Our mates from Woebegone Dive were even there to watch from the water as the first races kicked off at 5pm.
Finishing the day on five points each, Matthew took home the 10pts for the win, ahead of Andrew, with the result coming down to the very last race. Likewise, Scotty finished in third ahead of Paddy.
The VSC’s winning moment of the day goes to Joely Hodder for snagging his first race win in WaveGP.

Sunday
A big sou’westerly was on the cards and blew in from the very early hours. With a slightly different race schedule, the sailors enjoyed their salads and sausages for brunch. The salads from Clare Lord and Ehli Green were delicious, and thank you to Bec & Steve for their help with the BBQ and associated duties! Briefing was at midday, and the planned RTBR was amended in favour of a shorter course between Plantation Point and Moona Moona Creek on account of the swell at Huskisson.
Eventually, the fleet made it onto the water, and with two races planned, you had to absolutely perfect your downwind start or you’d end up somewhere you didn’t want to be. With a fickle breeze, shifting all over the place, stray gusts coming over the hill, and patches in the corner with absolutely nothing, it was a day that really made you think. Thanks to Adrian & Howard for their efforts on the start-turned-rescue boat!

In the 14s, Paddy surged out ahead, with MB and Macca hot on his heels. Hazel had an excellent start, but a stray gust left them upside down. Fionnbarr and Steve stayed trucking along, while Dobbo’s rolled cam saw him parked up on Collingwood while fixing it.
In the 16s, Matt & Ollie were consistent on the first downwind leg, but they didn’t have much competition as Bridget & Euan, after a capsize on the way to the start, were struggling to depower without completely losing boat speed. Matt & Ollie made it around the course, and Bridget & Euan just went for a fun jaunt before returning to shore.
Rennie & Liana and River & Joel took on the Waves, which, in hindsight, was a very sensible choice. Until, that is, River & Joel promised that they could right the boat by themselves when they went back out after racing. Poor Rennie had to head back out to help the kids (after spending a while in the water helping to right Hazel’s boat). He was shivering the whole time, but definitely won Dad of the Week and earned his hot shower!
