The forecast looked tricky from the outset, with a light to mid-range south-westerly pulsing over the Vincentia hill and onto the race track that Andrew and Kai set just north of Plantation Point.
Joining Egbert and Helen on the Nacra 5.8, it was a solid fleet for the final round of the Single-Handed Club Championship. All four Hobie Waves were on the water, with Rennie, Joss, River, and Joel racing alongside the Hobie 14 fleet.
The opening race proved super tricky in the marginal south-westerly. Paddy took out the Hobie 14s across the line, with MB and Jake closing the gap on the final downwind stretch to the finish. It was very much a “head out of the boat” kind of day, with constant shifts keeping sailors on their toes. Meanwhile, River sailed superbly to take the win in the Waves, just a boat length ahead of Joel.
As Andrew and Kai attempted to shorten the course, it was soon discovered that Poly had a flat battery. MB headed ashore to grab a jumper pack, and racing continued on the original course. Jake then took out the second race with a perfectly executed port-tack start, leaving the rest of the fleet in his wake.
The next two races were short and sharp, with the final race eventually sailed on an adjusted course to suit the developing south-easterly. River took out the overall honours in the Wave fleet, staying out on the race track along with Paddy, who later returned ashore with a damaged boat.
A huge shout-out to Marc and Liana for stepping up to manage the club from shore, and to all the legends who turned up for the penultimate day of racing.
With the season finale just around the corner, we’re beyond excited for next weekend and the Jervis Bay Classic.
