Spring Handicap: Week 2 & Double-Handed Championship: Round 1
The second weekend of the VSC’s Spring Handicap was one to remember, incorporating the first round of the double-handed Club Championship. With a building djringdjring (easterly) building in the afternoon, and Jeremy & Ollie joining our Race Officer, John on the start boat, the intrepid mariners of the VSC were in for a splendid day on the race track.
Fourteen boats hit the moona moona of the course of the day. Rennie took charge of the Getaway, taking Al and the boys for a play with the dolphins, as Vargs followed along on the Wave for his first weekend back. Meanwhile son & father duo, Eddie & Marc, raced with the big boats on the Dragoon for the first time; prompting the inevitable question: when will Ed kick Marc off the front of the boat?
Throughout the day, seven Hobie 14s were playing on the ever-changing race track. Four races were held in the morning, with Palm Beach Sailing Club’s Dave, snapping at the heels of MB & Andrew in each heat. Our fearless leader, Jake, found the groove on his Hobie 14 as the breeze began to build, as did Steve who persistence is continuing to show race to race. Finally, tweedle-dee & tweedle-dumb (Dobbo & Adrian) thought playing bumper boats was a sensational idea when a top-mark rounding didn’t quite go to plan; resulting in Adrian abandoning ship, and Dobbo have to clean up his mess!
Four Hobie 16s were on the start line for the inaugural double-handed Championship. Nigel & Esther made their grand return, as did Elliot’s parents, James & Steph, sailing together for the first time this season. Clare & Helen were once again displaying why they’re the current holders of the trophy, as Paddy & Bridget hit the water on Munyunga, proving that an old set of rags still have a bit of grunt!
Paddy & Bridget took home five bullets from the seven heats in total, falling to Clare & Helen who made the jump on the pair during the start of the third heat. Likewise, James & Steph and a blinder of a second lap in the fifth heat, excellently outsmarting their younger opponents. Nigel & Esther found their groove in the breeze, nailing their starts in the second session.
Thank you to Lisa for cooking the best lunch of the week, along with Rebecca & Clare for bringing along their iconic salads. And, finally, thanks to Jezza for capturing these moments on the water. Who knew you were such a talented photographer!
