Fresh off the back of a successful weekend at Wangi Wangi for many of our intrepid VSC sailors, the excitement for Sunday was palpable! However much the forecast was shifting, it didn’t stop anyone, and we were rigged and ready at 9:30am while we waited for the nor’easter to fill in.
MB was on race duty; he set us a course almost identical to the previous week at Wangi – either a chance for redemption or a chance to prove yourself. With 9 14s, 1 16, 2 18s, and the Nacra, we were on!
A steady breeze that was sitting around the 15kt mark came through, and we were off. MB wasn’t mucking around, even if there was only a whistle to tell us what to do…
In the races, the fleet was tight. Excluding Jezza, who got line honours by a mile in all three races. Fionnbarr was doing excellently in second place until his tramp ripped in Race 2, so he went to join Matt on the 16, who had been killing it one-up. Kiaran found himself a Norwegian crew for the 18, and they were zooming around chasing down Jake & Oliver on his freshly dusted 18.
Marc (once he sorted his tacks out), kept up excellent boat speed, but Bridget (who had already sorted her tacks out), managed to match him and sneak in front. Dobbo was part of the pack with freakishly fast downwinds, and Adrian was always in the corner of your eye.
Egbert & Helen continue to display masterful control of the Nacra (if you ignore the bruises from getting thrown around…). Steve persevered, winning the award for the most capsizes, and Paul McKenzie was having the time of his life. Doug, on faithful Old Yella, kept it moving, which is what really matters.
Rennie, fresh out of racing, found himself back on the water to chase around Joel on the Wave, because it was just too nice a day not to.
Thanks to Bec for the salads and to Ollie for cooking the sausages, and to Andrew McKenzie for always being around, even while nursing his shoulder.
Big shoutout to Paddy & Courtney, who took on Tanilba Bay over the weekend. They came away in 2nd in a very competitive 16/18 fleet!
