In what could be called one of the VSC’s most successful away regattas in recent times, Wangi Wangi put on an absolute show for the sailors who trekked it four hours north to Awabakal Country for the second round of the NSW State Titles.
As the most well-represented club, with 18 sailors across 10 14s, 2 16s, and 3 Waves/Dragoons, it was almost inevitable that we would have a successful weekend. Our excitement was palpable, and that was evidenced by the eager few who got themselves on the water for a test run on Friday arvo (a good strategy, perhaps…?).
It feels important to name each VSC sailor who came, because we are so proud of them for their commitment and enthusiasm. Whether they were seasoned competitors or had jumped on a boat for the first time a month ago, everyone was resilient, patient, showed strong teamwork to get each other moving, and also achieved some pretty impressive results.
On the Waves & Dragoon: Liana (solo!), Angie & Grace (first timers!), and Joel & River (amusing!)
On the 16s: Matt & Ollie (first time in a while, Ollie’s first ever), and Court (& Bec, between them representing NCYC and SPASC as well)
On the 14s: MB, Paddy, Bryn, Adrian, Fionnbarr, Hazel, Bridget, Marc, and Bloody Leon & Worst News (double represent with GCCC)
Our results were:
14s Significant Results
- MB took out 6 of 7 1st places, with an upset by Bryn in Race 6, finishing 1st overall
- Bryn didn’t carry a result worse than a 5, and averaged a 4th, and with the win came away in 3rd, one point behind Paddy
- Paddy had a 2nd, couple of 3rds, couple of 5ths, and came 2nd overall
- Bloody Leon & Worst News were 4th & 5th respectively, with Leon having an excellent Day 1 with 3 2nds
- Marc, finishing in 9th overall with an absolute blinder of a last race finishing 2nd (“I even got in front of Mick at one point!”)
14s Honourable Mentions
- Fionnbarr, best result 13.5, overall 19th, even with a hull full of water…training is paying off!
- Adrian, best result 11th, overall 20th
- Bridget, best result 17th, overall 21st
- Hazel, best result of absolutely shredding their gudgeon (after already) snapping a tiller extension

- Matt & Ollie with a very consistent average of a 7th, deviating only occasionally
- Court (& Bec) with a few 3rds overall, finishing…3rd in the Women’s
Wave & Dragoon
- A wholly VSC fleet!
- Liana won this round, with 4 1sts
- And one point behind were Joel & River (on aptly named Ratbags)
- And a stellar first performance from Angie & Grace, who can still say they finished third in the state!

It wouldn’t be a big regatta without the efforts of those we leave on the beach, and everyone behind the scenes who fixes what we break.
Rennie – replaced mainsheets, found tillers, ultimate Dad for both his children and everyone else. Elhi, Benita, Pete, Bec – moral & technical support, food suppliers, photographers, taxis – the young ‘uns (and the not-so-young) are very grateful to you and all you do!
After an incredible weekend both on and off the water, the crew are very excited to welcome you to the Jervis Bay Classic (25-27 April), where the ranks will have even more of our intrepid members and beyond! We’ll see you on Sundays!
